Crosswind
2018
Reno, NV
Inspired by the clients’ backgrounds in aeronautical engineering, Crosswind draws from the contours of the Eastern Sierra foothills. The home embraces its sloped site with sweeping views, abundant sunlight, and prevailing afternoon winds, while ensuring privacy from a nearby highway. The design balances exposure and comfort—deep overhangs, clerestory windows, and strategic insulation mitigate solar heat gain while inviting natural light deep into the interior.
The layout separates a guest-ready wing from a private suite that includes a study, gym, and elevated master bedroom—doubling as a work-from-home space with expansive views and outdoor access. A sloping ramp acts as a promenade, emphasizing spatial transitions and defining the home's bold form.
Durable materials like board-formed concrete, fiber cement, and steel shape the core, while cedar-clad volumes extend outward. Outdoor spaces mirror the natural slope, integrating planters and seating into the terrain for a seamless connection to the landscape.
