Altitude at Nakoma Resort
Completed 2018
Clio, CA
Located in Clio, CA, Altitude is a year-round recreation center designed to serve both resort guests and the surrounding community. Developed alongside the boutique Lodge at Nakoma, the facility was part of a broader vision to expand lodging and leisure offerings. The building’s layout connects active zones—like the gym, climbing wall, and daycare—via a central breezeway, while more formal lounge and dining spaces open toward the pool deck, the heart of the complex.
The architecture is shaped by the site’s dramatic topography, views, and cultural context. Influenced by the traditions of the local Maidu people and the nearby Frank Lloyd Wright clubhouse, Altitude balances modern functionality with a deep respect for place. Maidu basketry inspired the pool deck’s design and material palette, while east-facing glazing along the breezeway echoes their seasonal structures, welcoming morning sun and creating a warm, light-filled interior.
Awarded both Northern Nevada AIA and Nevada AIA design honors, Altitude exemplifies site-sensitive, culturally informed design.
